Jamawar is one of the most treasured textile arts from Kashmir due to their intricate patterns and colorful exuberance – in fact one shawl can have up to 250 different colors. Jamawar shawls always feature floral designs around kairy (paisley) patterns. Believed to flourish under the Mughal Empire, interest in Jamawar shawls began to wane during the last century. Novica invites you to contribute to the preservation of this legendary textile art form through our exclusive Jamawar shawls collection. In olden days, weaving a Jamawar wool shawl was a painstaking job that included a team of workers: the women clean, dye and spin the wool whereas the men prepared the warp, made the designs and wove. Given that so many colors were used, it would take a whole day to weave one inch of a 48 inch shawl! A weaver took more pride in the design and quality of the finished shawl, than in the money he got for it.
