As an art form, batik has been known for thousands of years but it is difficult to know where it originates from. Based on findings, it could be Egypt, Turkey, China, Japan or West Africa. Indonesia is well-known for its unique textile artistry, and the evidence resides in Novica’s collection of batik scarves. A silk batik scarf or a cotton batik scarf is a most enviable accessory. Brought to Java in the early 1800’s, batik is believed to have been reserved for royalty and some patterns were exclusively reserved for the Sultan. Other scholars disagree and feel its use was prevalent with the people. In fact, young women were expected to be skilled at making their own batik scarves, shawls and sarongs as a prime example of housewifery skills. Patterns may have evolved but the canting techniques remain the same, and this legendary art form can be appreciated in a variety of women’s batik scarves and clothes. Indonesian artisans preserve tradition as they develop myriad patterns for men’s batik shirts as well as men’s batik robes.
